Gibraltar Deal
Spain and Britain yesterday signed a fiscal treaty on Gibraltar as Brexit nears to fight tax fraud and money laundering.
Hailed as “massively significant” by Gibraltar’s leader, it was signed separately by Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell and David Lidington, Prime Minister Theresa May’s effective deputy.
It must now be approved by the Spanish cabinet and ratified by the parliaments of both countries.
The treaty was part of a deal sealed in November between London and the European Union on Brexit, as were four other bilateral deals on the overseas British territory.… Read all the news

Car Chase
FIVE police officers have been injured and a 23-year-old man arrested after he ploughed into a road block bringing a high-speed car chase to an end.
Police shot out the tyres when the driver failed to stop at the road block on the A-226 and smashed into officers – injuring five – near Teruel at 9am, yesterday.
The chase started 44 Km away before the incident came to an end with armed officers hauling the driver from the car which ended up in a ditch.… Read all the news

Gibraltar No Deal
Gibraltar’s British status is to be protected under a tax deal which will apply even in the event of a no-deal Brexit, it has been claimed.
A source with ties to the Rock’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo says an agreement has been reached between the British, Gibralta and Spanish authorities.
The deal will reportedly remain sacrosanct even in a no-deal situation, despite previous attempts by the Spanish to use this as a bargaining lever.

Brexit No Deal
The government will work to make things easier for British residents in Spain, even those without permanent residency status, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Madrid is planning to offer new residency papers to around 400,000 UK nationals if the country crashes out of the European Union without an agreement on the future relationship.
British residents in Spain will have to apply for a foreigner identity card before January 2021

North Korean Embassy Attack
More details have emerged about a mysterious attack last week on the North Korean embassy in Madrid, suggesting that the incident was more serious than first thought.
According to sources close to an investigation into what happened on February 22 “around 10 people carrying fake firearms” entered the residential building, and assaulted the eight people inside, who were a mixture of “staff from the embassy and guests.”

Brexit
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will trigger a new raft of legal measures tomorrow destined to safeguard Spain, its traders and British residents in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
If the European Union agrees to extend the deadline for Brexit beyond March 29, Spain will not stand in its way, said Sánchez, but that he wants to know what Britain would intend to do with the extra time.

North Korean Embassy Assault
Police have launched an investigation into an assault on the North Korean embassy in Madrid that saw a group of men enter the building and make off with computers.
Sources confirmed an assault took place and that the intelligence service was probing the incident.
A spokesperson for North Korean embassy said “nothing had happened.”
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial said the assault lasted “hours,” during which time an embassy employee managed to escape and alert the authorities.

Exhumation
The Spanish government will continue works to exhume the remains of dictator Francisco Franco despite legal action.
An administrative court in Madrid had ordered the government to halt the exhumation over safety concerns after Franco’s family resisted attempts to rebury him.

Alicante Tragedy
AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy has died after falling from a window in his fifth-storey home.
Despite the efforts of paramedics they were unable to save him after the accident in Alicante.

Brexit
Gibraltar has said it wants to remain in the EU and that cancelling Article 50 would be ‘the best possible outcome’.
The British Overseas Territory made the comments in a press release yesterday just hours after the UK’s Labour Party announced it would support a second referendum.
Gibraltar said: “Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar would back a ‘remain’ outcome in such a referendum
It added that it was concerned over British Prime Minister Theresa May’s delaying of a meaningful vote on her Brexit deal until March 12, just two weeks before the UK departure date.… Read all the news

Gibraltar Spat
The Spanish Foreign Ministry has sent a letter to UK authorities threatening legal action over a housing project in Gibraltar.
Madrid sees a violation of the sovereignty principle because the Hassan Centenary Terraces project involves “illegal land reclamation in waters under Spanish sovereignty,” said a ministry source.
Spain could file a complaint with the European Commission, and even turn to the European Court of Justice
The complaint was issued on February 19, and deepens the diplomatic malaise that began in October 2017, when authorities in Gibraltar came up with an affordable housing plan on the east side of the Rock involving six high-rise towers with 665 housing units.… Read all the news
