IMF Boss
A former managing director of the International Monetary Fund yesterday had his prison sentence for corruption crimes confirmed by Spain’s Supreme Court.
The court ratified the 2017 verdict by the National Court that sentenced Rodrigo Rato, who headed the IMF between 2004-07, to four-and-a-half years in prison for embezzling funds through opaque credit cards while he was president of a Spanish bank whose losses following the 2008 financial crisis saw it bailed out for at least 22.4 billion euros.
Rescue
Firefighters rescued a paraglider yesterday after he ended up trapped after trying to jump from the Sierra de Redován, in Alicante.
The 21-year-old male resident of Albacete, was taken to the Hospital after trying to jump off the cliff top when the wind caught his parachute, leaving him stuck on the cliffside, a 100 metres from the top 60 metres to the ground below.
A rescue team member abseiled to the man and secured a harness onto him, enabling the helicopter to lift him to safety.
Missing Man
Police Scotland are working with Europol and Spanish police in the search for a man last seen in Tenerife almost four months ago.
Alan Jeffrey, 25, was last seen by his girlfriend on June 10.
Mr Jeffrey, from North Lanarkshire, has not been in touch with his family since then and he was reported missing to Police Scotland on June 26.
Mr Jeffrey is described as white, around 5ft 10in with a stocky build and short, receding brown hair.
When last seen, police said Mr Jeffrey had indicated he was planning to travel to Marbella with friends.
Footbal
The president of the Spanish Footballers’ Association has said La Liga players will not play regular-season games in the United States.
On Tuesday La Liga president Javier Tebas said plans to play Girona’s home match against Barcelona in Miami on Jan. 26 were moving forward despite opposition.
The Association has said it is against the game being played overseas, with the Royal Spanish Football Federation unlikely to authorise the move.
Last month, FIFA voiced reservations over La Liga’s plan, part of a 15-year marketing agreement with Relevent Sports to promote football in North America.
