The Spanish government will continue works to exhume the remains of dictator Francisco Franco despite legal action.
An administrative court in Madrid had ordered the government to halt the exhumation over safety concerns after Franco’s family resisted attempts to rebury him.

Alicante Tragedy
AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy has died after falling from a window in his fifth-storey home.
Despite the efforts of paramedics they were unable to save him after the accident in Alicante.

Brexit
Gibraltar has said it wants to remain in the EU and that cancelling Article 50 would be ‘the best possible outcome’.
The British Overseas Territory made the comments in a press release yesterday just hours after the UK’s Labour Party announced it would support a second referendum.
Gibraltar said: “Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar would back a ‘remain’ outcome in such a referendum
It added that it was concerned over British Prime Minister Theresa May’s delaying of a meaningful vote on her Brexit deal until March 12, just two weeks before the UK departure date.… Read all the news

Gibraltar Spat
The Spanish Foreign Ministry has sent a letter to UK authorities threatening legal action over a housing project in Gibraltar.
Madrid sees a violation of the sovereignty principle because the Hassan Centenary Terraces project involves “illegal land reclamation in waters under Spanish sovereignty,” said a ministry source.
Spain could file a complaint with the European Commission, and even turn to the European Court of Justice
The complaint was issued on February 19, and deepens the diplomatic malaise that began in October 2017, when authorities in Gibraltar came up with an affordable housing plan on the east side of the Rock involving six high-rise towers with 665 housing units.… Read all the news

Benidorm Stabbing
Two Brits have been arrested after four people were stabbed in Benidorm on Sunday night.
The incident saw a fight from a club on the main strip spill out onto the street before four people were knifed and left in a ‘serious condition’.
Two of the victims are believed to work for a bar popular with tourists on Calle Mallorca.
The two British men arrested are aged 20 and 21.

Benidorm Stabbing
Two British men have been arrested after two workers were stabbed at a Benidorm nightspot last night.
The tourists, 20 and 21, were detained after staff at a venue on Calle Majorca – in the resort’s Little England area – were left with knife wounds.
Calle Majorca is the same street where a British holidaymaker was shot in the buttocks last July.

Murder
A 26-year-old man from Madrid has been arrested on suspicion of killing his mother then putting her remains in Tupperware containers.
The incident came to light when a friend of the missing 66-year-old contacted the police to say she hadn’t seen her for about a month, prompting a patrol to visit the family home on Thursday.
The son was immediately arrested on suspicion of killing his mother.
Police said the suspect had previously been arrested 12 times, for various reasons.… Read all the news

Catalan Trial
Day six of the trial against the pro-independence leaders in Catalonia saw testimony from Jordi Sànchez, the former leader of the civil association ANC. The involvement of Sànchez in a protest on September 20, 2017 is of key importance to the case, given that accusations of violence during that demonstration are integral to the charge of rebellion that several of the 12 defendants are facing.

Barcelona Clashes
Riot police clashed with pro-independence Catalan protesters in Barcelona yesterday while other activists burned tyres and tried to block highways across northeast Spain as part of a day of protests against the trial of 12 separatist leaders.
Near the Plaza Catalonia railway station in downtown Barcelona, police in riot gear used batons against a large group of mostly young protesters after some of them hurled stones at the police. No arrests or injuries were reported.
Called by a small pro-independence union but without the backing of larger unions, the one-day strike was not widely followed although it generated several protests.… Read all the news

Spanish police have been accused of heavy-handed treatment of Celtic fans who have traveled to Valencia to watch their team’s Europa League second-leg match this evening.
Thousands of supporters have jetted to Spain without tickets.
The Valencia Football Club closed it’s ticket office this morning as some fans were said to be trying to buy tickets using Irish Passports.
The Spanish government’s Anti-Violence Commission announced earlier this month they have deemed the game a ‘high-risk encounter.’
A popular Rangers’ bar in Benidorm – the Golden Last pub – was set on fire in the early hours of yesterday morning in an attack blamed on arsonists

European Visa Row
British tourists may face a €60 charge to visit Europe after Spanish demands over Gibraltar’s status derails EU visa free travel plans.
The dispute over whether the British Overseas Territory should be described as a ‘colony’ threatens agreements on legislation that exempts UK nationals from requiring the travel permit.
Yesterday the European parliament rejected a Spanish proposal that a footnote containing the contentious description of the disputed territory be added to the legislation.
