Arson
Arsonists are suspected to be behind a wave of wildfires which have hit Cantabria.
The regional authority reports that round 32 different forest fires were active in 20 municipalities.
This was a reduction of six from the 38 which were active yesterday after around 430 members of the fire brigade, along with civil guards and volunteers from civil protection units and the Red Cross had spent all night fighting the flames.
Authorities report that the majority of the fires were started deliberately.
Both the Guardia Civil and Regional Government are investigating who is behind the fires and have made two arrests.
Chinese Bank Accounts
China yesterday urged Spain to take “effective measures” to ensure that the “legitimate rights” of Chinese citizens are not violated after reports emerged that Spanish banks had frozen accounts of thousands of Chinese citizens without prior notice.
“The Chinese Embassy received complaints from citizens there that their bank accounts had been arbitrarily frozen. The Chinese Embassy expressed its concern to the Spanish side and offered assistance to the relevant Chinese citizens.
“A senior official from the Department of Consular Affairs of China’s Foreign Ministry also met with the Minister of the Spanish Embassy in Beijing to make representations over the matter.
The problem came to light last Friday after hundreds of Chinese citizens took to the streets in Madrid to protest against their accounts being frozen, accusing Spanish banks of “racism.”
